The legacy of Stephen Bantu Biko: Theological challenges

This volume is the outcome of a project, “Reading the classics in context”, conducted by three institutions: Unisa’s Research Institute for Theology and Religion, the Northern Theological Seminary (Pretoria) and the Protestant Theological University (the Netherlands). Reading the volume is like walking through a gallery. The walls are lined with portrayals of Biko from different angles and in various styles, from highly abstract to subjectively impres-sionistic. Collectively they reflect a remarkable person who, in his short life and with very few printed records of his thinking, left an indelible mark on South Africa’s intellectual history. The dearth of written sources is apparent in the bibliographies of the various papers, the stature of the man in the response he has evoked − not only from the conference speakers but from millions of South Africans, black and white − since he first spoke out in the 1960s right up to the present, three decades after his martyrdom.
