Slavery Remembered: A Record of Twentieth-Century Slave Narratives

This study is the first major attempt to present systematically and to analyze effectively the material from the slave narratives in the Federal Writers' Project. Historians have previously employed only white sources to describe slavery, but Escott uses these narratives to portray slave life and culture, slaves' attitudes toward bondage, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. These descriptions reveal how the slaves' hatred of oppression strengthened their community and shaped their relationships with whites.
